Sahara Pune Warriors defeated Kochi Tuskers Kerala by 4 wickets with 7 balls to spare in a low scoring encounter between the two IPL debutant teams. Kochi skipper Mahela Jayawardena won the toss and decided to bat. But they lost very quickly as they were reduced to 24/4 in 4.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja (47 off 33 balls) and Brad Hodge (39 off 36 balls) somewhat recovered the team and with the last minute knock of Raiphi Gomez (26 runs off 18 balls) helped the team reach only 148/8 in 20 overs. Wayne Parnell scalped 4 wickets for 35 runs for Pune Warriors. In reply, Pune Warriors batsmen also could not hold long partnerships but blazing knocks of Robin Uthappa (31 runs off 13 balls) and Mohnish Mishra (37 runs off 21 balls) helped the Pune team to reach 15/6 in 18.5 overs. Mohnish Mishra was awarded the Man of the Match.

Muttiah Muralidaran, Ravichandran Ashwin and Suresh Raina had the best bowling figures for the Chennai Super Kings with figures of 2/8, 2/13 and 2/17 respectively. Muttiah Muralidaran was awarded the Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance.

Deccan Chargers were at the last position in IPL T20 season 1 while Chennai Super Kings were the finalist last year. But times have changed and fortunes also seemed to have changed as the match results showed. Adam Gilchrist won the toss and put Chennai Super Kings to bat. Though Chennai Super Kings lost a few wickets but due to a brilliant innings by Matthew Hayden (49 off 35 balls), they were cruising at 88/2 after 10 overs. But then the CSK batsmen struggled and failed to capitalize on the terrific start and ended at 165/6 in 20 overs. Pragyan Ojha was good with the ball for the chargers and took 2 wickets for 11 runs in 2 overs. Deccan Chargers started their innings with sixes and fours throughout the ground by Adam Gilchrist (44 off 19 balls) and Hershelle Gibbs (69 off 56 balls) and they reached 60 in merely 4 overs. Though Chennai Super Kings tried to take a few wickets and curb down the run rate but it was too late and Deccan Chargers cruised to 169/4 in 19.3 overs. Suresh Raina did well for the Super Kings with 2 wickets for 18 runs. Hershelle Gibbs was awarded the Man of the Match for his splendid innings of 69 runs off 56 balls.

Chennai Super Kings has a defeat in their first IPL match against Mumbai Indians. On the other hand, Bangalore Royal Challengers had deated IPL T20 season 1 champions Rajasthan Royals in their opening match. But everybody knew that Dhoni and his boys had the potential to return back strongly in the tournament. And that is what they did with a resounding win of 92 runs. Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat. Matthew Hayden (65 off 35 balls) and Parthiv Patel (30 off 26 balls) smashed the Bangalore bowlers for fours and sixes and the Chennai Super Kings reached 106/0 in the first 10 overs itself. Though Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals after that but the base laid by Hayden was enough to cruise them CSK to 179/5 in their 20 overs. Bangalore Royal Challengers lost wickets at regular intervals when they came to bat and the efforts of Jacques Kallis (24 off 19 balls), Rahul Dravid (20 off 18 balls) and Robin Uthappa (20 off 19 balls) were not enough as they were bundled out for 87 runs in 15.2 overs. Muttiah Muralidharan bowled a super spell of 3/11 which fetched him the Man of the Match award.

Andrew Flintoff is quite hopeful that his appearance in the IPL T20 season 2 will help him in learning a lot about the T20 game. Flintoff will be playing his first IPL match for Chennai Super Kings on April 18 against Mumbai Indians after CSK had bought him for $1.55 in the IPL auctions this year. Last year the English players were not allowed to play in IPL but four English players have been bought by the IPL franchisees this year including Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen. Flintoff has been suffering from injuries and problems for quite sometime but he thinks the IPL would help him revive his body once again. And he believes that this would help him immensely in preparations for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in England which would follow the IPL. He also said that he would great benefit being in Chennai Super Kings as he would be able to learn from great players like Dhoni, Hayden and Muralidharan. He said that he would be speaking to the other Indian guys too and try to ‘pick their brains’. He believes that the league is a very good platform to exchange knowledge between the players and he will also benefit from it.

However, Flintoff is also worried that the English players should not reveal too much information about their team-mates while conversing with their IPL team-mates as that might be detrimental for England team. Flintoff’s second match would be against his English team-mate Kevin Pietersen’s side Bangalore Royal Challengers on April 20. Anyways lets wait and see how IPL would help Flintoff and how Flintoff would help IPL.
