Yusuf Pathan shines again as Rajasthan Royals beat Delhi Daredevils 0

Posted on April 28, 2009 by admin

Yusuf Pathan saved the match for the Rajasthan Royals once again as he hit a blazing 62 off 30 balls with six 6s guiding them to victory. Virender Sehwag won the toss and decided to bat. Most of the Delhi Daredevils batsmen failed yet again and Delhi could only score 143/7 in their 20 overs by virtue of a 50 by AB De Villiers off 40 balls. Shane Warne, Munaf Patel and Dimitri Mascarenhas took 2 wickets each for the Rajasthan Royals. Rajasthan Royals also kept on loosing frequent wickets as they came to bat though Graeme Smith (44 off 46 balls) was consistent on one end. The Royals were struggling at 64/5 after 11 overs when Shane Warne got out but Yusuf Pathan came to the rescue once again and his powerful hitting helped the Rajasthan Royals reach the target in 18.3 overs. Amit Mishra performed well for the Delhi Daredevils with his bowling spell of 3 wickets for 34 runs. Yusuf Pathan was awarded the Man of the Match for his blazing 62 off 30 balls and the maximum sixes award for this six 6s in the match.

Delhi Daredevils beat Chennai Super Kings in a close match 0

Posted on April 23, 2009 by admin

Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings are both probable winners of IPL T20 season 2 and so this match was expected to be a cracker. Virender Sehwag won the toss and decided to bat. Both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir went out cheaply and it seemed Delhi was not in its usual song today. But then AB de Villiers (105 off 54 balls) hit the first century of IPL 2 and Tillakaratne Dilshan hit 50 off 27 balls to guide Delhi to the highest score of IPL T20 season 2 till now. Delhi Daredevils scored 189/5 in 20 overs giving a seemingly impossible to total to chase of 190 runs. Balaji shone with the ball with 3/19 in his 4 overs. But Chennai Super Kings bounced back very well and with brilliant innings from Matthew Hayden (57 off 27 balls) and Suresh Raina (41 off 27 balls) the match became very competitive. However, they lost too many wickets and they finished at 180/9 in their 20 overs. Pradeep Sangwan and Danniel Vettori shone with the ball with 3/28 and 2/29 respectively. AB De Villiers was awarded the Man of the Match for his blistering century.

Delhi Daredevils beat Kings XI Punjab in rain affected match 0

Posted on April 19, 2009 by admin

Delhi Daredevil’s first match and the third match of IPL T20 season 2 was against Kings XI Punjab and it was expected to a very competitive and high scoring match. Both the teams have some great hitters and even both the captains Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh are regarded as two huge hitters of the cricket ball. But the match was heavily delayed as rain decided to play spoilsport. The match had to be reduced to 12 overs after several rain disruptions. Then Kings XI Punjab side were attacking from the very beginning and with brisk contributions from Karan Goel (38 off 21 balls), Ravi Bopara (22 off 16 balls) and Yuvraj Singh (16 off 11 balls) then managed to reach 104/7 in their 12 overs although their last few overs were not great. Sehwag (38 off 16 balls) and Gambhir (15 off 13 balls) came as the openers of the Delhi team and they started playing their natural game hitting boundaries and sixes. It was then that rain decided to play spoilsport once the target was revised to 54 in six overs. Sehwag continued with his hitting and the Daredevils completed the target within 4.5 overs. Daniel Vettori was declared Man of the Match due to his spell of 3/15.

I-Pee-Later!! 0

Posted on April 17, 2009 by flamy

My dad would be proud. I am in bed by 10 pm, set the alarm for 6 am, have a sandwich ready in the fridge and actually have a plan for the next day (well… at least half of it). I’m gonna wake up at 6 and run to stand under the shower to keep myself from nodding off. Brush them pearlies, race to my room and jump into my boxers while microwaving the sandwich. And then plop on the couch, fire up my laptop and take my first bite with the first ball.

And then, an odd but familiar feeling whispers from my bladder. Arrrggghhh!

I Pee Later!
It’s the IPL!

Who’d have thought a league of motley crews would generate so much excitement and so much moolah? When it first started, I was quite bemused by it all. Hit and Giggle and all that, I was flabbergasted as to which team to follow. I could just pick the team from my city, but dearie, that is not so easy when you are like me – an Indian. There are a lot of identities to an Indian – I’m an almost Telugu feller living in Bangalore, born in Madras having spent most of my childhood in Orissa and Maharasthra. I love Delhi femmes, Bengali rossogollas and Punjabi music. One Fresh Identity Crisis to-go please?

So, I just winged it in Season 1 cheering for all the Indian guys playing irrespective of the team. Officially, I opted for Bangalore Royal Challengers, Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings. But, I just couldn’t help but jump with joy when Sehwag smashed Symonds all over. And when Sehwag demanded the Hyderabad crowd to applaud his fifty, I was filled with the most eclectic mix of emotions – the short-circuit of incredulity, a whisper of indignation, the glow of wonder, an affirming warmth of pride, the goosebumps of patriotism, a gush of primal excitement and the soothing balm of unparalleled unity. I was sold.

One of my teams made it to the finals and with it solidified my choice for Season 2 somewhat. It was a fitting finale to a great new avatar of my favourite sport.

And now here it is – IPL Season 2. I still support BRC, CSK and DC. It is true hell when they face each other. But, I have begun to enjoy the team rivalries and all the joshing that comes with it. I have already committed blasphemy, brought out my inner regionalist and revved up my factory of under-the-belt potshots.

So, to sport a cliche, Cricket sure unites us all. But, boy does the IPL make a mockery of that unity.

OK, gotta pee now.
